Professional athletes to participate in Opelika Juneteenth parade | Community Spirit
Major league athletes from the area are turning out to celebrate Juneteenth with community this year.
Opelike native and former NBA and MLB player Erick Strickland, along with Auburn native and former NFL player Marcus Washington, will be serving as Grand Marshals for the Opelika Juneteenth Parade on Saturday, June 22, 2013.
Juneteenth, which is officially on June 19, is a holiday that commemorates African-American freedom, and encourages self-development, respect, and appretiation for all cultures.
“This will be a great opportunity for people to come out and learn about the holiday and celebrate as a community.” said Jacquetta Allen Ward, Founder of GEMS Empowered Inc., official Juneteenth sponsoring organization.
Juneteenth events are scheduled from Thursday June 20 to Saturday June 21, and include a Shootout Against Violence, Basketball Tournament, and Gospel Entertainment Showcase.
The celebration culminates in a Parade of Mentors and Fun Day at Bandy Park at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 21.
Henrietta Snipes, Chairman of Opelika Housing Authority Board of Commisisoners, and Elaine Strickland, NBA Mom, are heading Saturday's events which feature a history of the area narrated by elected officials.
Marchers are welcome to join in along the parade route. Line-up starts at 9 a.m. at Darden Head Start and the parade ends at Bandy Park for a day of family fun and activity.
