Dandyland Child Care Center under investigation

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM)- Tuesday afternoon, we
confirmed a total of four police reports have been filed alleging harassment at
the Dandyland Day Care Center.

Allegations children were
hit with rulers and wet towels continue to follow the day care center owned and
operated by East Alabama Medical Center.

A Department of Human
Resources report obtained by News Leader 9 states on February 21, DHR visited Dandyland
after the center's director reported two staff members had used prohibited
discipline in their classroom.

Lee Co. ranks low for resident per capita spending

LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM)- The Lee County Commission has released an annual report on the amount of the County's revenue spent per resident for primary services.

At first glance the numbers do not appear positive; however, this comparison is not a fair indicator of the financial health of the county.

City of Opelika hires new Chief of Police

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM)- For the first time in 22 years, the City of Opelika has named a new Chief of Police.

After reviewing 52 applications for the position, Mayor Gary Fuller decided to bring in Opelika native and veteran of the Opelika police force, John McEachern.

"It was not an easy decision, but I think I made the right decision with John and he'll do a great job," explains Fuller.

Chief McEachern was with the Opelika police department from 1974 to 1988 serving in various positions on the force, before joining the Federal Bureau of Investigations for 24 years.

Opelika council approves Miss America homecoming resolution

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM)- Miss America is coming home to Opelika.

The Opelika City Council has
approved a resolution to bring Opelika native Mallory Hagan home.

The 23-year-old beauty
queen is also "Miss New York" since she lives there now.

Each council member would
contribute $500 toward bringing the Opelika native to town May 16 for a
homecoming celebration.

According to the economic
development coordinator, the grand sum of $2,500 dollars is being asked to
bring the beauty queen to town and would cover all of her expenses.

Lee Co. home burglary suspects arrested

LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM)- Two Lee County teens have been arrested and face burglary and theft charges after a homeowner surprised one teen as he walked out the homeowners' front door, carrying the homeowners' gun.

The two teens have been identified as 19-year old Keuntae Mapson of Opelika and 18-year old Quincy Gilmore of Auburn.

Deputies say the homeowner called 911 around 10:30 Tuesday morning when he pulled into the driveway of his Beauregard home in the 600 block of Lee Road and caught the suspects in the act.
