Storybook Farm provides hope on horseback

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM)- Fun is the first order of business at Storybook Farm, along with physical and emotional therapy.

The exercise helps Henry Strickland strengthen his core and ease muscle tension from cerebral palsy.  Along with a plethora of physical benefits, kids gain acceptance, confidence and praise.

Storybook Farm is a faith-based equine therapy stable, situated just off 431 in east Alabama. The stable provides free programs to over 800 physical and special needs children, and their families.

Professional athletes to participate in Opelika Juneteenth parade

Major league athletes from the area are turning out to celebrate Juneteenth with community this year.

Opelike native and former NBA and MLB player Erick Strickland, along with Auburn native and former NFL player Marcus Washington, will be serving as Grand Marshals for the Opelika Juneteenth Parade on Saturday, June 22, 2013. 

Juneteenth, which is officially on June 19, is a holiday that commemorates African-American freedom, and encourages self-development, respect, and appretiation for all cultures.

Lee County Circuit Court Clerk retires after nearly 20 years of service

LEE COUNTY, AL (WTVM)- After serving the Lee County Judicial System for nearly two decades, Circuit Clerk Corinne Hurst is retiring six years before her term ends. 

For 18 and half years, Circuit Court Clerk Corinne Hurst has been elected by the people to manage their court system. The tremendous responsibility includes acting as custodian for all court records, managing millions of dollars, handling juries and serving as a top election official.

Now, after nearly two decades of service, Hurst is retiring.

for a home.

Some AL high schools see dip in 2012 graduation rates

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM)- Alabama graduation rates have been released by the state board of education for the year 2012. 

Overall, the state earned a 75 percent rate. More than 45,000 seniors graduated, and close to 3,600 students dropped out.

Michael Sibley, Alabama Department of Education, says this is a 3 percent increase for the state since 2011, with about 1,800 more students graduating from high school than the previous year.

Be extra vigilant this summer, don't leave children in hot cars

(WTVM)- Summer doesn't begin until
June 21, but already this year seven children have died of heat stroke after
being left in vehicles.

 KidsAndCars.org reports
the following deaths in a 16-day period in May: 

 ~A 5-month-old girl died
May 10 in El Paso, TX after her mother – a high school teacher – unknowingly
left her behind in her SUV


Walking after you eat is good for your health

(WTVM)- After a meal, don't sit in
front of the TV or take a quick nap; instead, get up and move.

Walking can help keep off
the pounds and may even prevent diabetes.

Researchers at George
Washington University found taking a 15 minute walk after every meal can reduce
blood sugar levels.

They also discovered the
method is more effective than taking one 45 minute walk every day.

Doctors say exercise right
after a meal keeps blood sugar from spiking.
